Marketing Intelligence: Built for Local Businesses in Portobello
Within City of Edinburgh, Scotland, Portobello shares postcode district EH15 with neighbouring Duddingston, Newcraighall and Cleikimin. Edinburgh's Royal Mile runs along the 'crag and tail' left by a glacier scraping past the extinct volcano that Edinburgh Castle now sits on, linking the Castle to Holyroodhouse along five joined streets first named as a single route by a writer in 1901. Squeezed for space within the old town walls, builders had nowhere to go but up, lining the Mile with tenements ten storeys and higher centuries before the word 'skyscraper' existed anywhere else.
Government data (ONS, March 2026) counted 18,635 VAT and/or PAYE registered businesses here. Essential Edinburgh runs the city centre's Business Improvement District, covering New Town from Charlotte Square to the St James Centre, while the separately run Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce brings together more than 800 businesses citywide.
73.8% of new businesses in City of Edinburgh were still trading two years on, as of 2022 (ONS). With that much movement in the local business population, marketing intelligence is exactly what helps a business hold its ground.
