Friars' Ground is a locality in Westmorland and Furness, in the North West region. It falls within the LA17 postcode district. Neighbouring places include Beanthwaite, Chapels and Grizebeck. Barrow-in-Furness built Holland 1, the Royal Navy's first submarine, in 1901, and went on to become the UK's largest submarine manufacturer, building 312 submarines including HMS Dreadnought, Britain's first nuclear-powered submarine, in 1960.
ONS's latest snapshot (March 2026) recorded 11,500 VAT and/or PAYE registered businesses in the area. Barrow BID has represented the town centre's businesses since 2016 and was re-elected for a third five-year term in 2026, running through to 2031, funded by a levy on town centre business rates.
2.9% of businesses in Westmorland and Furness were classed as high-growth in 2024 (ONS). That kind of churn is precisely why website creation matters - standing still isn't an option when the market around you isn't.
